Today, there are an estimated 5,400 crisis pregnancies each year in Hong Kong. Emerging data indicates that there is strong association between childhood trauma and teenage pregnancy. A traumatic experience often results in violation of one’s sense of safety, which includes physical, emotional, psychological and relational safety. When we approach vulnerable pregnant girls to embrace them into relationship, it is important that we know how to assist the girls to re-establish a sense of safety and to support them to understand and express their feelings and memories related to trauma.

Hung Suet Lin Shirley, Head & Professor and Director of the Social Work Practice and Mental Health Centre of Department of Social Work, Hong Kong Baptist University. Speaker: Professor Hung Suet Lin, Shirley
Prof. Hung was a graduate of The University of Hong Kong, London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and The Melbourne University. She is currently Head & Professor and Director of the Social Work Practice and Mental Health Centre of Department of Social Work, Hong Kong Baptist University. She is a registered social worker, Fellow of the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association and Honorary Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Social Work. Prof. Hung has been researching on social issues, delivering professional training and developing intervention models to work with various disadvantaged groups through the past few decades. She has also been known for her delivering training in narrative therapy/practice in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Mainland China.
The academic interests of Prof. Hung cover a wide range of areas including women and families, teenage pregnancy, violence against women, community development, disadvantaged groups and social work education. She has also had wide professional and community involvement. Some of the examples include being the member/chair of the Social Workers’ Registration Board (2007-13); member of the Hong Kong Women’s Commission (2014-2020) and member of Equal Opportunities Commission (1996-03)
